Simon's
Town Secrets, Simon's Town Country Club
by Harry Moore, Chairman
Cape
Town has been named the number one long haul destination
for the second year in a row. Many visitors are
so enamored with the City, they return year after
year. Little wonder that they have been able to
find and make their holiday headquarters in sea-side
villages, out of but close to the City.
Simon's
Town has become one of the gems regular visitors have
discovered. It is no surprise that they have selected
this quaint village as their accommodation base. January
to March seems to be the favoured months. Soon Autumn
known as the "secret season", usually wind
free and warm, will be discovered.
Given
the amenities and natural beauty concentrated in a
small area it is easy to understand why the popularity
of Simon's Town keeps growing. It is a quaint, nautical
village, once home to the Royal Navy South Atlantic
fleet. There are many heritage sights that can be visited.
A varied and ample number of restaurants to suit most
tastes are available. Included in the mix is an English
pub, the "Two
and Sixpence".
Natural
beauty abounds. It is possible to visit different spots
for days on end without duplication. It is a mere 15
kilometers from the Simon's Town Village center to
the gates of the Cape Point Nature Reserve, home of
the famous Cape Point lighthouse. Only five kilometers
to the world renowned Penguin colony.
For
the sports minded, particularly golfers, the Simon's
Town Country Club is a well kept secret. It consists
of a well maintained nine hole links golf course. While
walking the golf course you can see the sea from every
tee, green and fairway. During the week the course
is not busy. This pleasure can be enjoyed at a bargain
price for eighteen holes. The Simon's Town Country
Club can be contacted by email - their address is stcc@telkomsa.net or
fax +27 21 786 4712.
If
the golf is not going your way you may see a penguin
or two waddling around the course. Alongside the fifth
fairway is a tranquil beach, "Windmill" beach.
The beach is sheltered and offers safe bathing and
white sands. For the wives and children who find little
interest in golf they will be able to spend happy hours
relaxing on the beach. "Windmill"
beach is considered so scenically beautiful it has been
discovered and is, a few times a year, used for International
film productions.
However,
it is not uncommon between mid July through September
to sit on the beach, walk along the golf course or
from many other vantage points watch the Whales enjoying
their annual sojourn to the Western Cape waters in
order to mate and calf. It is such a welcoming sight
to see them "breaching" and churning up the
False Bay waters.
The
experience of visiting Simon's Town Country Club is
special for each and every member or visitor. It may
be the views. It may be the relaxed and friendly atmosphere,
it may be the reasonable fees or the catering facilities,
whatever the reason you are always most welcome and
are sure to be back!
