CRIME

‘BOBBY ON THE BEAT’/ Community Patrol Officer as he is now officially known.: The CPO is back.

  • The effects of not having a CPO are all to clear. An increase in vagrants and Bergies and huge antisocial behaviour. It’s going to take a while to sort all this out but the immediate effect of having Mbelelo has surpasses all our expectations.
  • The CPO operational agreement is currently for 20 shifts a month during Daytime Trade. Our aim is to increase to 28 shifts. However, first we ensure we can afford and maintain the 20 shifts.
  • He will shortly be in radio contact with the Simon’s Town Police Station for emergency callouts.
  • Our Out of Town visitors have already expressed their gratitude for his assistance on a number of occasions within his first two weeks!
  • The SAP and the Simon’s Town Community Police Forum have given their full support.

Mbelelo is known to many of us already. He is now contracted and employed through Mach1 Security. Manu Choudree, who heads Mach1
is actively assisting with the supervision of the project

Mbelelo can be reached on 082 713 8384 should you require his services urgently.

Enormous amounts of gratitude are being lauded on Paul Dixon for taking on the difficult task of collecting funds from the community to enable this project to get started again.

CCTV:
SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL POLICE FORUM AND POLICE STATION.
The Police Forum is in desperate need of funding to improve and maintain the camera system. As with all new technology the problems creep in and are only discovered by use.

Our wires have been crossed on a few facts regarding the donations already received…

The Original Amount Collected:
1. 3 Camera’s were installed. The system has been tested and the pro’s and con’s have been drawn up.
2. The balance of the monies not used for this original installation are still in STADCO’s account awaiting Phase 2.
FOR THOSE CONCERNED ABOUT THEIR ORIGINAL CONTRIBUTIONS- WE HAVE CHECKED ON SOME OF THE NAMES AND YOUR MONEY IS THERE ALBEIT IT IS INVESTED INTO THE 2ND PHASE WHICH STARTS ON MONDAY 2ND OCTOBER.
All progress reports will be available at the next Police Forum Meeting on the 30th OCTOBER 2006 (AGM) 17:00 at the Library Hall. Please attend and you will be giving the update and be able to query any concerns you may have.

Phase 2 (Commencing 02nd October 2006)
1.2 of the 3 camera’s need to be repositioned.
2.The next set of camera’s need to be installed further into town.
3.The Maintenance schedule needs to be put into place.
4.A FURTHER R30 000 needs to be collected to ensure the completion of this next phase in it’s entirety and the maintenance be put into place.

There are another 4 Phases that need to be installed and activated. The entire project will cost on completion of all 6 phases being installed in the region of R150 to R200 000.00
Add in Maintenance and Insurance and we need to aim at R250 000-00.
When one looks at it this way we can see that the money raised already gave the project a great kickstart but for it to be ultimately beneficial we still have a way to go.

Any ideas or anyone wanting to host a function to help raise funds please contact us or Arne Söderlund.

The system has proven extremely effective in FISH HOEK and can only be beneficial to us all.in SIMON’S TOWN. It is an ongoing project and can only expand and improve with our support.

A contribution of R30.00/month from each business will assist immensely and enable a proper systematic maintenance should to be put in place. It’s well worth it.. at R1 per day we can play a really productive role in combating crime in our area.

Please note that this is NOT a compulsory fee and should you wish to give more you are welcome.
For those that want to know what they get out of it: Constant Surveillance and Police vigilance in the area.

A Collection box will be at the next Meeting. Payments can also be made to STADCO or via the Simon’s Town Business Association

COMMENT FROM THE PEANUT GALLERY: Yes, the peanut gallery is in contradiction. The businesses on the Main street felt very strongly about the “Bobby” / CPO. being back on patrol. We’re now looking at R130.00 per month to keep both CCTV and CPO. in place.
Thank you to all those who have contributed this month to help maintain the Camera’s.

Bag Snatchers: Are still at large. Please be vigilant as we’re going into season and this is their prime time. Unfortunately the last snatching that we had was an overseas visitor who did not open a case as he would have been unable to return for the possible court case. He is a middle aged white man, reasonably tidy looking - perhaps a little unshaven carrying an A4 sized holdall with shoulder strap. He has been seen around town so maybe he is living (rough?) in the area and was seen on the weekend trying to sell pre-packed Italian ham.

Some more tips to help prevent the crime wave increasing:

  1. FRAUD is on the increase. DON’T DO ANY DEALS THAT ask you to pay out a THIRD PARTY.
  2. Be wary of REFUNDS especially if a booking is made in advance and the client says he has overpaid by mistake.
  3. Both CREDIT CARDS & CHEQUES ARE BEING USED IN SCAMS.
  4. The Credit Cards are COUNTERFEIT CARDS.
  5. The banks say the transactions can take up to 3 weeks to be referred back.
  6. A group of “church” ladies are also in possession of counterfeit cards and are going around doing illegal transactions.
  7. DON’T BE DUPED into giving Cash on any Credit card transactions.
RATHER BE SUSPICIOUS AND MAKE THE CALLS TO CHECK AND VERIFY TRANSACTIONS.
