What is PUPP?
Submitted by Yvonne Robson BVetMed BSc

PUPP is a registered non-profit organisation that has, since 1995, been sterilising and treating animals and educating their owners in underprivileged areas such as Capricorn Park / Vrygrond, Lavender Hill, Parkwood, Retreat, Lotus River, Ottery and many more. PUPP is pro-active. PUPP personnel go door to door in search of animals in need and to educate the community on responsible animal ownership. To date over 11,200 animals have been sterilised with the kind assistance of the Animal Welfare Society, the Animal Rescue Organisation and the SPCA. Most sterilisations are heavily subsidised by PUPP. Funds come from donations, grants and fundraising events. PUPP asks pet owners for a donation towards cost of sterilisation, but the majority are unable or unwilling to pay anything at all. PUPP is therefore obliged to search elsewhere for the necessary funds to enable us to relieve unnecessary suffering. For the year 2004 NLDTF ( Lotto ) has become one of PUPP's funders.

What is PUPP SOUTH?

PUPP South was launched in April 2004 to assist disadvantaged communities in the Southern Peninsula.

PUPP South will strive to sterilise as many dogs and cats as possible. On site treatment will be provided for sick and injured animals. Initially the team will focus on Masiphumelele and Ocean View until the current serious pet over-population problem in those areas has been brought under control, at which point they will focus on another needy area.

The growing feral cat populations in areas such as Simons Town will also be monitored. Where feasible, a trap - sterilise - release policy will be effected for these animals.

PUPP is not involved with kennelling and rehoming of animals. All such cases will be referred to appropriate, established Animal Welfare or Animal Rescue Societies.

How can you help?

PUPP's main aim is to sterilise as many animals as possible thus reducing the misery caused by uncontrolled breeding. Any financial contribution - no matter how small - will be used to cover sterilisation costs.

Your contributions will have a significant long - term effect by reducing the numbers of unwanted animals being born. Please contact Yvonne Robson
