Places and things of interest in Simon's Town

Named after Simon van der Stel - his recommendation
at the time was that the Dutch East India Company use the town as a
winter anchorage as it offers more shelter than Table Bay. In 1814 the
Royal Navy took over Simon's Town and used it as their South Atlantic
Station until the base was handed over to the South African Navy in
1957.
PLACES OF INTEREST:
FOXY BEACH & BOULDERS
One of the only two mainland breeding colonies of African Penguins
-previously known as Jackass Penguins (because of the sound they make)
4,000+ penguins at Boulders Beach - Breeding season starts in February.
They are monogamous with lifelong partners. They have very sharp beaks
and can cause serious injury.

CHURCH OF ST FRANCIS
The oldest existing Anglican church in South Africa.
SIMONS TOWN MUSEUM

IBEKA
Built in 1816 as a residence and used as an isolation hospital for
smallpox in 1840.
JUBILEE SQUARE
Pride of place is given to a sculpture of Able Seaman Just Nuisance,
erected by public subscription in remembrance of the Great Dane who
befriended and assisted naval ratings during World War II.
WARRIOR TOY MUSEUM
Permanent and unique collection of toy cars and trains, dolls and

S.A. NAVAL WAR MEMORIAL
The first battery with an AA gun - his one called Skinny Liz.
ROMAN ROCK LIGHTHOUSE
The third oldest lighthouse in the country and the only one situated
on a rock. It was commissioned in 1861.

Depicts the history and forced removal of the Islamic Residents

Situated at the junction of two earth's most contrasting water masses
the cold Benguela current on the West Coast and the warm waters of the
False Bay on the East Coast, the Cape of Good Hope is popularly perceived
as the meeting point of the Atlantic and the Indian oceans. Geographically,
however, the Indian ocean joins the Atlantic Ocean at Cape Agulhas
Proclaimed the area a nature reserve in 1938. Incorporated in the Cape
Peninsula National Parks in 1998. It encompasses 7 750 hectares of rich
and varied flora and fauna. 40 kilometers of coastline.
